First Grade Field Trip

by Laura Tennigkeit

October 07, 2009

The first graders in Mrs. Katzer's, Mrs. Tennigkeit's and Mrs. Way's class participated in a field trip to Hitchcock Nature Center on September 25, 2009.  We had the opportunity to learn about nature.  The first station was over the Signs of Fall.  We discussed the differences between coniferous and deciduous trees. The color changes in nature.  In station two the student learned how to use binoculars and had a chance to go up in the observation deck.  In station three they learned ways seeds move and also using their sight and touch to determine seed characteristics.  In station four students discovered the magic of owls in Iowa, including the Great Horned and Screech Owls. They listened to owl calls as well as view owl egg replicas and pellets.  It was a beautiful day for a walk discovering things about nature. The classes really enjoyed their day.
