Softball Season Summary - 2014

Underwood Eagle Invitational - June 14, 2014

Underwood stretched its legs in the tournaments opening game pounding out 16 hits and playing solid defense behind pitcher Tobey Yates who helped out with 8 K's in five innings.  East Mills had a 2 to 1 lead going into the 3rd when Underwood took over and led the rest of the way.
Tobey Yates, Emma Bonnet had 2 doubles each and Lea Crouse had 1 double. Yates and Shay Tiarks had 3 RBI each in the game.
Elizabeth Walker was 2 for 2 with  2 RBI for East Mills.

GAME 2

Underwood jumped on top and stayed there again playing stellar defense behind 8th grade battery of pitcher Anna Hall and catcher Alexa Martinez.  Sidney was mounting a comeback in the 5th only to see it end with a 5- 4- 3 double play. Sidney had the bases loaded in the 6th again when Tobey Yates came in to pitch to get out of the inning and closed the game in the 7th.  Yates was 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs. Shay Tiarks hit and reached base 3 times in the game.

Game Three: Championship Game

Riverside and Underwood earned there way to the championship game playing there 3rd game of the day. Underwood took advantage of 7 Riverside errors and went on to a win. Sydnie Collins went 2/3 with a triple and a RBI and Lauren Shapcott was 1/3 with 2 RBIs.
Tobey Yates pitched well giving up no earned runs and had some great defensive plays from Shay Tiarks and Lea Crouse to aid in the win.

Underwood vs. Missouri Valley - June 13, 2014

Underwood Pitcher Tobey Yates and the Eagle defense held Missouri Valley's  offense in check while allowing only 1 hit to there top 5 batters in there order in 18 plate appearances.  The defense retired the Lady Red's  1 2 3 in 4 of the games frames none bigger than the top of the 7th when the top of the order was up and we were able to get the leadoff to pop up to the catcher Emma Bonnet and Yates stuck out the number 2 and 3 hitters  to end the game.
Yates was two for three with three of the Eagles RBI while Bonnet doubled in the game and scored.  Next up for Underwood is the Eagle Invitational on Saturday, June 14th.

Underwood vs. Tri-Center - June 11, 2014

Underwood shot itself in the foot Wednesday night giving up 4 unearned runs in the first inning.  The Eagles were unable to recover by not being able to get a solid hit off of Tri-Center pitcher Brenna Rodenburg.  Shay Tiarks had a double with a run scored and the only other Eagle to hit on the night was center fielder Erin Shapcott.

Underwood vs. Audubon DH - June 9, 2014

Underwood broke open a close game in the top half of the seventh inning sending 9 runs to the plate in the first game of a WIC softball double header.  Lea Crouse was 3 for 4 with 5 RBI to go along with Tobey Yates 2 for 4 with a double and 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. Emma Bonnet and Madeline Stephens each had 2 hits apiece.

GAME 2

Underwood kept the bats alive in game two of the double header to win the night cap 18 to 8, Emma Bonnet smashed a home run to center field with Tobey Yates aboard. Lea Crouse again continued with her hot bat going 3 for 4 with 3 RBI While Tobey Yates was 2 for 3 and 3 runs scored. Sydnie Collins was 2 for 2 with an RBI and Lauren Shapcott 2 for 3 with an RBI.  Eighth grader Alexa Martinez was behind the plate for the Eagles and added 2 RBI.

Underwood vs. Glenwood - June 6, 2014

Underwood had the lead until the 4th when they surrendered it with 2 unearned runs in the 4th and 1 in the 5th to drop a non-conference game to 8 - 1 Glenwood.  Tobey Yates was 3 for 4 batting with a double, RBI and a run scored. Emma Bonnet went 2 for 4 with a double, 2 RBI and a run scored. Erin Shapcott reached base three times scored two of the Eagle runs. 8th grader Anna Hall also reached base all three of her plate appearances.

Underwood vs. Treynor - June 4, 2014

Underwood handed Treynor a win by committing 9 errors on the night.  It was a different type of Treynor offense than what we have seen in the past.  We just need to do better on defense in making plays.  Erin Shapcott reached base three times with two singles and catcher Emma Bonnet had a double and a single on the night.  Madeline Stephens was 2 for 3 on the night.

Underwood vs. IKM DH - June 2, 2014

Tobey Yates fanned seven IKM batters but we had errors at critical times with base runners on to lose the game.  Yates was 3 for 4 with a double, single, RBI and two runs scored.  Lea Crouse was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI.  Sydnie Collins had a single and a run scored.

GAME 2

Underwood dropped the second game of the double header struggling once again in the defensive department.  Erin Shapcott had a double, Alexa Martinez and Lauren Shapcott had a single for the Eagles.  Erin Shapcott came in relief for the Eagles in the bottom of the fourth.

Underwood struggled to figure out the strike zone with 8 backwards K's on the night while leaving 7 Eagles stranded on base.  Underwood only gave up one earned run in the game while commiting 4 errors in the game.  Erin Shapcott, Tobey Yates,  Emma Bonnet and Shay Tiarks each had a hit on the night.

Underwood vs. Missouri Valley - May 28, 2014

Underwood Softball opened conference play with a 7 to 5 win over Missouri ValleyWednesday night.  Tobey Yates picked up the win in the circle with a strong performance giving up one earned run and striking out seven batters.  Shay Tiarks and Emma Bonnet led the hitting attack with Tiarks doubling and a single with 2 RBI and Bonnet having three hits including a double and 2 RBI.  Yates also doubled scored and added a walk.  Defensively, Madeline Stephens had great day with a diving catch for the third out in the 5th and showed her range while fielding a ball in 6th and taking it for the unassisted out.

Underwood vs. Harlan - May 26, 2012

After Underwood jumping out to a five to zero lead after three innings Harlan came roaring back in the fourth on 4 Underwood errors to score 7 and take the lead, Harlan continued to push there lead to 12 to 5 into the top half of the 6th then Underwood came back to tie the score in the bottom half of 6. Harlan regained the lead in the seventh after two outs with three straight walks and runners scored on errors.
Tobey Yates and Lauren Shapcott doubled in the game, Yates scored twice and reached base three times, Lea Crouse scored twice and had two RBI, While Shay Tiarks reached base three times and scored twice also.  Yates, Crouse and Tiarks had some stellar defensive plays on the night in the loss.  

The way we played the first three inngs are more of the team you'll find us to be this season as we find our groove we have no returning players from there last season starting position so its going to take some time to get used to working together.
