The Underwood Performing Arts Center was built with the intention of hosting events throughout the year for the enjoyment of students as well as adults. The long-range mission of the facility is to provide quality music and entertainment for the citizens of Underwood and the surrounding area. The Jaimee Paul show on Sunday, February 15, 2015, got things off to a great start. People I have talked to who attended her show came away very impressed and said they are really looking forward to attending the next show starring Jim Curry at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 10, 2015. Mr. Curry’s show is a tribute to the late John Denver. The untimely death of John Denver in 1997 was a tragedy felt the world over. Such a void in the musical world left John Denver’s fans hoping his music would survive. CBS television responded by producing a made-for-television movie entitled Take Me Home: The John Denver Story in which Jim Curry landed the off-camera role of singing as the voice of John Denver. The huge success of this experience inspired Mr. Curry to produce full-length John Denver tribute concerts which have helped him emerge as the top performer of John Denver’s music today. He has taken his show on the road to performing arts centers across the United States and Canada. In addition, he is one of the most popular performers on the Holland America Cruise Line. Our elementary school was one of fifty-six elementary schools in the State of Iowa that had student artwork on display at the 2015 Youth Art Month Student Art Show at the Iowa State Historical Building in Des Moines during the month of March. This annual event celebrates the rich visual arts tradition in Iowa school districts and encourages students to be creative. Over 500 works of student art were on display. Our elementary art teacher, Liz Lyons, did a great job promoting this event locally and was very pleased when she learned that six of our students had artwork selected for display. Those six students are Samantha Spiker, Tucker Jensen, Ava Brensel, Charlie Bracker, Ainsley Roberts, and Alex Freeman. Congratulations students and thank you, Mrs. Lyons, for all of your hard work!
The members of the Underwood Dollars for Scholars organization will host their fourth annual fried chicken fundraising dinner at UMBA Hall from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 26, 2015. This event will feature fried chicken, a baked potato, green beans, and ice cream. The cost will be $10.00 for ages eleven and up, $7.00 for ages five to ten, and will be free for ages four and under. Take-out orders will be welcome. A silent auction and raffle will be held during the event. Donations of completed baskets or items such as gift cards will help fund scholarships for graduating seniors from Underwood High School. Please note that there will be no school for students on Thursday, April 2, 2015, because of a professional development day for faculty members. In addition, there will be no school on Friday, April 3, 2015, and Monday, April 6, 2015, because of spring break. Classes will resume on Tuesday, April 7, 2015.
