APRIL 2017 DISTRICT DISPATCH
The Iowa State Report Card rates each public school in the state based on a set of performance measures and then assigns each school a rank. Iowa lawmakers first created the report card, which was newly released earlier this year, in 2013 as part of a legislative requirement to provide schools and communities with an easily accessible comprehensive look at schools in Iowa. The performance measures include information on student proficiency rates in academic areas such as mathematics and reading, college and career readiness, student attendance, and graduation rates. Many of the indicators are derived from or connected to students’ scores on state assessments, which are also used to meet federal accountability requirements.
Based on each school’s performance over a two-year period, the report card assigns one of six ratings: exceptional, high-performing, commendable, acceptable, needs improvement, and priority. In an article that was published in The Daily Nonpareil on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, Underwood High School and Treynor High School were recognized for receiving “high-performing” ratings. Other southwest Iowa high schools were rated as follows: Abraham Lincoln (acceptable), Thomas Jefferson (needs improvement), Lewis Central (commendable), AHSTW (commendable), East Mills (needs improvement), Glenwood (acceptable), Harlan (commendable), Missouri Valley (acceptable), Riverside (acceptable), Tri-Center (acceptable), and West Harrison (acceptable).
The members of the Underwood Dollars for Scholars organization will host their sixth annual fried chicken fundraising dinner at UMBA Hall from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 2, 2017. This event will feature fried chicken, a baked potato, green beans, and ice cream. The cost will be $10.00 for ages eleven and up, $7.00 for ages five to ten, and will be free for ages four and under. Take-out orders are welcome. A silent auction and raffle will be held during the event. Donations of completed baskets or items such as gift cards will help fund scholarships for graduating seniors from Underwood High School. Questions regarding the silent auction should be directed to Sandy Redshaw at 566-9574. Thank you for your help in supporting this worthy event!
