Underwood Speech Wraps Up Awesome Season!
One Group, Three Individuals Make All State
On Saturday, January 20th, 2018, five Underwood Speech groups competed at Large Group District Contest at Treynor High School. The first of those groups consisted of Brock McDonough, Kyle Shapcott, Liam Campin, and Nick Starnes. This group performed an acting piece and received a 1 rating. Underwood also brought 3 improvisation teams to contest. These groups were Brock McDonough, Kyle Shapcott, and Liam Campin, who got a 1 rating; Jill and Justin Rosas, who got a 1 rating; and Karsten Lambert, Skyler Keller, and Reid Dettbarn, who got a 2 rating. Underwood’s final group at District Contest was a Short Film group consisting of Logan Kimball, Adam Mander, Reid Dettbarn, Clayton Moore, and Kiyra Felner. They received a 2 rating.
Two weeks later, at Waukee High School, the teams who received 1 ratings at District Contest competed at Large Group State Contest. All groups received overall 1 ratings at State. Jill and Justin Rosas were nominated for Large Group All-State Non-Performing for their improv performance.
On Saturday, February 24th, 9 Underwood Speech students competed at the Individual District Contest at Griswold High School. Brock McDonough competed in the category of Prose and received a 1 ratings. Karsten Lambert competed in the categories of Original Oratory (2 rating) and Improv (1 rating). Alexis Redshaw competed in Acting and received a 2 rating. Alyssa Wacker competed in Solo Musical Theater and received a 1 rating. Jill Rosas competed in the categories of Acting (1 rating) and Prose (1 rating). Hunter Valdez competed in Prose and received a (2 rating). Kyle Shapcott competed in the categories of Expository (1 rating) and Acting (1 rating). Reid Dettbarn competed in Reviewing and received a 2 rating. Skyler Keller competed in Storytelling and received a 1 rating. Overall, Underwood left Districts Individual contest with 8 out of 12 ones.
The 6 students who received a 1 at Districts moved on to the Individual State Competition at Nevada High School. At State, six of the eight performances received a straight 1 rating including Jill Rosas (Prose), Kyle Shapcott (both events), Brock McDonough, Karsten Lambert, and Skyler Keller.
Jill Rosas and Brock McDonough were both nominated for All-State in the Prose category, and Kyle Shapcott was nominated in Acting. These three students will perform at the All-State Contest on Monday, March 26th at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, IA.
