I. Course Description: Concert Band is a performance-based class.
The Concert Band is the main training ensemble. Concert Band is
open to all students playing wind and or percussion instruments
from grades 9-12. This course meets first hour every day and has
required early morning rehearsals during the marching season. The
performance schedule includes all home football games, home
basketball games, two concerts, state marching in the fall, solo
ensemble contest, large group contest, and a summer parade on the
4th of July.
II. Course Objectives: Goals and objectives for the course
include:
1. A thorough understanding of a variety of musical literature.
2. Development of multiple social and life related skills.
3. A sense of responsibility and belonging to a competitive
group.
4. Work towards multiple participants in the Iowa All-State and
SWIBA Honor Bands.
5. Competing in the State Marching Competition
6. The ability to perform alone and with others on a musical
instrument.
III. Grading Procedures:
1. The majority of each student’s grade is based on attendance.
2. This is a performance-based class. Students are heavily graded
on all scheduled performances throughout the semester.
* Absence to any required performance listed in the Band Handbook
without permission from the director could result in a failing
grade for the semester.
All absences will result in a zero grade for participation.
Students who are excused will have the option to make up missed
participation points.

Handbook for dates of performances, grading scale, and discipline
plan.
