Kingery Reaches Finals and Places Second
Underwood frashman Alex Thomsen capped a perfect season by winning the Class 1A state title at 113 pounds. Alex defeated Tipton's Eric Lenz in the championship match by a score of 10-3, dominating his opponent from the neutral position and securing 5 takedowns. Previously in the tournament, Thomsen was victorious by fall in round one over AHSTW's Joel Becerra. He followed that up with a thrilling 5-4 victory over defending state champion and previously unbeaten Drew West of Highland, Riverside. In the semi finals Alex dominated Alburnett's Ben Moyer by a 24-9 technical fall, adding to his now school-record total of 22 TF's in one season. For the season, Thomsen won 44 matches without a loss!
Underwood senior Cody Kingery completed his high school career in impressive fashion, marching into the finals of the state tournament before falling to Central Springs senior Kegen Fingalsen, 4-0. In round one Kingery used precision attacks and intelligent wrestling tactics to win 8-4 over Sal Arzani of I-35, Truro. Cody followed that up with a bone-crunching fall over Noah Huber of Hudson in only 2:56. In the semi finals match, Kingery controlled the pace of the match from beginning to end, winning 7-3 ober Logan Peed of South Central Calhoun. For the season, Kingery compiled a record of 31 wins and only 3 losses. Of the 31 wins, 22 were by fall, making his career total an incredible 119.
